A recent study on the use of SEROQUEL in the management of major depressive disorder has also found that SEROQUEL can be used for the treatment of acute generalized anxiety disorder.

In the study, researchers assessed 300 patients who took SEROQUEL for a mean time of 7.2 months and treated them with the drug in a dosage of 50 mg per day. Patients were monitored for adverse events and their progress was assessed.

“Our findings indicated that SEROQUEL can be a useful treatment option for acute generalized anxiety disorder in patients who have not responded to other treatment options,” says lead study author, Dr. Lisa C. Fife, M. D., of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a co-principal investigator for the study.

“These findings support the use of SEROQUEL in the treatment of acute generalized anxiety disorder, and further expand the potential benefits of SEROQUEL as an alternative to traditional antidepressants for this purpose.”

The researchers also discovered that the combination of SEROQUEL and aripiprazole, an atypical antipsychotic, did not appear to have an effect in the acute phase of the disorder. This led to the development of the “Qol” and “Qalalavir” drugs, which are approved for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, respectively.

“As we reported, SEROQUEL is a viable treatment option for acute generalized anxiety disorder that has not been shown to be effective in the acute phase. This finding is particularly encouraging because patients are often treated for an extended period of time and continue to experience the symptoms of acute generalized anxiety disorder,” explains Fife. “Additionally, we observed that patients were able to tolerate the combination of SEROQUEL and aripiprazole as well.”

The combination of SEROQUEL and aripiprazole in acute generalized anxiety disorder is not yet approved in Europe for the treatment of acute generalized anxiety disorder, but Fife says that in the U. S. this drug has been approved to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder.

“This study suggests that it is not just SEROQUEL that is being studied, but the combination of aripiprazole and SEROQUEL as well,” Fife. “In addition, it also supports the use of SEROQUEL in patients with the acute phase of the disorder. This is particularly important because it has been shown to be effective for the treatment of acute generalized anxiety disorder, with the combination of SEROQUEL and aripiprazole showing promise.”

The findings also provide further support for the use of SEROQUEL in patients with the acute phase of the disorder, with the study noting that aripiprazole and SEROQUEL are effective in both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

“This finding is particularly encouraging because patients are often treated for an extended period of time and continue to experience the symptoms of acute generalized anxiety disorder,” explains Fife.
